What is a Clearing Instruction?
It is mandatory for importers and exporters to provide their clearing agents with clearance instructions for EVERY formal clearance in terms of the Customs and Excise Act, 1964.

What are the limitations for exporting or importing using your ID/Passport number?
All private individuals without an importer/exporter code are now allowed to:
Import or export any number of consignments up to an annual total combined threshold of R150 000
No individual shipment limitations apply provided the total annual threshold is not exceeded
What is CIF?
An abbreviation used in some international sales contracts, when the selling price includes all “Costs, Insurance and Freight” for the goods sold. This means that the seller arranges and pays for all relevant expenses involved in shipping goods – from their point of export to a given point of import.
In trade statistics, “CIF value” means that all figures for imports or exports are calculated on this basis, regardless of the nature of individual transactions.
What does “Landed cost” mean?
The cost of the imported goods at the port or point of entry into a country, including the cost of freight, insurance and port and dock charges.
All charges occurring after the goods leave the import point are not included.
What is ad valorem tax in South Africa?
Ad valorem tax, essentially a luxury excise tax that exponentially increases with the price of the vehicle and is calculated according to a formula. Set at a maximum of 30%, the ad valorem excise duty is calculated on the basis of a sliding scale, with the rate of the duty increasing with the value of the vehicle.
What is a Phytosanitary Certificate?
A certificate issued by a government agency (usually agriculture) to satisfy import regulations of foreign countries.
The certificate indicates that a shipment has been inspected and found free from harmful pests and plant diseases.
